JRALED LED Lighting has produced this simple guide to LED Lighting. The information is based on our research over several years, and on the questions our customers often ask us.

While we are constantly monitoring and reviewing the development of new lighting technology, we cannot guarantee that the information is completely up-to-date and, as such, it should only be used and treated as general advice, not technical specifications or part of any warranty offered.

    What are LED’s?

A light emitting diode (LED) is a diode that emits light when an electrical current passes through it.

LED's are based on solid state lighting (No glass or fragile elements)

LEDs are similar to traditional light bulbs, however LEDs do not have a filament or fragile glass globe, so they generally last a long time and are less susceptible to accidental damage.

Because there is no filament (that heats up to produce light) LEDs do not get as hot and require far less electric power than traditional light bulbs due to their efficiency, saving you money, making the lighting safer, and having far less impact on the environment.

    How Do LED’s Work

LED's are solid-state semiconductor devices that can convert electrical energy directly into light. The heart of the LED is a semiconductor chip of which one side is attached on the top of an anvil that is the negative power lead and the other side is connected with a whisker to a positive power lead. It is entirely encapsulated in an epoxy resin enclosure.

It is the electrons that run through the LED semiconductor material that produce the light.

How much more light do they give out compared to other lighting?

One important comparison is the efficacy Incandescent lights give out. (Luminous Efficacy is a measure of the amount of visible lighting a light source gives out compared to the amount of power it uses). Traditional incandescent lights produce about 8 Lumens per watt. LED lighting technology originally gave out 50 – 60 Lumens per watt, now the range has increased to normally above 90 Lumens per watt. The main reason for the lower efficacy of traditional incandescent lighting is that the majority of the electrical power is converted into heat, rather than light. In the case of halogen lights, at least 60% of the power consumed is wasted as heat, with less than 40% being converted into light.

How much Power can be saved?

Up to 85% less power consumption than Traditional Incandescent Lights and around half the power of CFL’s.

    How long LED's do last?

Currently LED’s are expected to have a lifespan of over 50,000 hours, i.e. if LED's are lit for 8 hours each day, they will last for 50,000 / 8 / 365 = 17.12 years. Because of the extremely long lifespan the current expected lifespan has been calculated, some earlier makes of LED’s have already worked in excess of this, and the expected 50,000 hour lifespan, may actually prove to be much longer.

Do they age or wear out?

The lumen output will reduce slightly over their long lifespan, but far less than the loss of light suffered by CFL (Compact Fluorescent), Fluorescent and Halogen lights which lose a significant amount of light output, over their much shorter lifespan. (LED's don't blow out, they just dim extremely slowly).

Does the ALED warranty cover the drivers as well as the Down light?

Yes. The ALED warranty covers the whole unit, although it is normally only the driver that can be a problem. The main problem experienced by the driver unit is the result of poor installation. It is essential that the driver unit (and the LED light itself) is not covered by any form of insulation, as this will prevent the unit from dissipating heat and will lead to premature failure of the unit. Under such cases, the unit will not be covered by warranty.

Please refer to the installation guide for the requirements of installing LED products.

Can I fit the down lights myself?

All lighting units are supplied with standard Australian moulded 3-pin plugs. If you have existing lighting supplied from standard Australian base sockets, JRALED LED Down Lights could be a be a simple replacement.

Because LED lights use less power than incandescent or halogen lighting, and do not generate as much heat, they will be safer. But you need to ensure adherence to your local Building and Electrical Installation regulations. JRALED LED Lighting recommends that you check with a licensed Electrician to ensure that any direct replacement does align to the current standards and regulations in your state.

However you choose to install your lighting, please ensure that you follow the instructions on the Installation Guide that is included with your lighting.

Is there less light output from warm white lights?

Yes, Warm White lighting gives out a lower lumen value per watt of power consumed.

The science of Light is huge and complex, if you wish to increase your knowledge please complete a web search on “Colour temperature “using Google or a similar search engine.

JRALED LED Lighting was set up to provide Quality LED Lighting at an affordable price. Sorry we cannot answer scientific light output queries – as we are not scientists!

    Available LED Light Output Colours

The main colour temperatures that LED Lighting are manufactured to are:

    Warm White                           2800-3000K

    Natural White                         4000-4500K

    Pure White                             5500-6000K

    Cool White                             6000-6500K

Please note different companies may use a different term for a range of light output colour.

Please see the basic charts below:

The choice of LED colour output is huge, and is often personal preference; however Pure and Cool light are normally used in office environments as the light needs to be bright and clear.

Warn and natural light are often chosen for the home environment, but again it’s a matter of choice and the home lighting demand seems to be moving away from Warm White.

    Can LED lights change colour?

Yes, you can get LED units that change their output colour from Warm to Cool White. These units normally consist of two sets of chips side-by-side (for example one set being Warm White, and the other Cool White). As one set dims, the other brightens resulting a in a change in light tone.

RGB (Red, Green, Blue) LED’s that are controlled electronically give greater options of colour outputs.

This type of lighting remains relatively new, and is not in great demand. JRALED LED Lighting does not currently stock this type of colour-changing LED lighting, and has not yet tested its reliability or effectiveness.

    Are LED’s dimmable?

Most LED’s are dimmable, but it is the driver that allows this, not the LED Chip itself. Most JRALED LED products can be supplied as dimmable or non-dimmable, although some Australian Dimmers are not fully compatible with all LED Products, and may be the cause of early failures. We can provide customers with guidance on this as a result of our extensive research.

    Are they breakable?

LED’s are very robust and, unlike florescent lights, are resilient to knocks. LED's can withstand vibration, heat, frequent switching and extreme cold without affecting their performance.

Will MR16/ GU5.3 LED‘s work with my existing transformers?

LED MR16 spot lights will work with most electronic transformers, however JRALED LED cannot give any guarantees or replace any failed low voltage MR16 spotlights, unless an JRALED LED lighting MR16 LED driver unit is supplied and used with each of the spotlights.

The light output and lifespan may also be affected if any other transformer is used apart from JRALED LED Lighting supplied MR16 Driver. If a higher wattage LED globe is installed it is likely to require a higher voltage than the transformer is designed to supply, and this may cause the transformer to fail prematurely.

We recommend that it is generally cheaper and better in the long term to retrofit a down light unit, or Halogen replacement unit as these have matched drivers offering the highest efficiencies.

Do the GU10 Spotlights & E27 bulbs need a driver?

No, the GU10 Spotlights have integral drivers that work at the Australian  Mains supply, as do all the ALED replacement Edison screw, Bayonet and G23 fitting bulbs and spotlights. For further information on base types – please see globes page

Can I use my existing florescent battens for LED Tubes?

Yes , but it will be required to disconnect the Starter and the ballast unit , and install the mains supply direct to the tombstone tube  fittings +ve one end and –ve at the other.  All electrical work should be completed by a licensed electrical contractor, It is likely that replacing with a Panel Light will be a lower cost option due to the electricians hours required to convert an existing troffer to use LED tubes

How hot do LED lights get?

Most lights tested by JRALED LED Lighting operate at around 40 to 55 degrees centigrade. Some samples ran considerably hotter than this, so we do not stock those makes of LED lighting.

What Temperatures will LED’s work in?

LED lifespan is affected by temperature. The cooler an LED and driver remain the longer the Lifespan. ALED recommends that the area that the heat sink is in does not exceed 50 degrees Celsius. This means that an uninsulated roof space will affect the lifespan of the LED’s as these area’s can often exceed 70*C on hot days.

Can JRALED LED Lighting supply any LED Lighting types?

The range of LED lighting types is growing rapidly; JRALED LED Lighting does not stock every type of LED lighting product. However, we can research and test products that we feel would be widely used, and are happy to receive your enquiries.

We have a number of preferred suppliers who produce Quality Products, and have good QA/QC. We vet all our suppliers to ensure they operate a sustainable and ethical business, and look after their workforce.

Will JRALED LED Lighting be able to supply waterproof Lighting?

We currently supply IP65 outdoor lighting, and our 12Vdc rigid strips, are waterproof and rated at IP67. We are currently looking into future product ranges, including off-road light bars and spotlights. However, in line with our business policy we will not supply any types of light units, until we have confirmed that these products are made to the high standards required by JRALED LED Lighting and they are certified to Australian Standards.

Why are LED so energy efficient?

One of the main reasons is that the light they give out is their main output. This is in contrast with traditional lighting that wastes energy in the form of infra-red light, ultra-violet light, and a great deal of heat.

LED light output is very directional. The majority of the light goes in the direction you need it to go in, so energy is not wasted by lighting & heating area’s not required, such as your roof space.

Did you know a Halogen globe produces approximately 60% heat and 40% light, and will reach 350 *C in less than two minutes?

Why are LED’s considered a safer lighting method?

There are a number of reasons, including:

    • LED’s generate much less heat, so there is a reduced fire risk.
    • LED’s use a very low current, reducing cable overload, overheating and the potential for failure.
    • The drivers also reduce the voltage to the light fitting, so there is a reduced electrical shock risk at the light fitting.
    • LED’s do not emit UV / IR light.
    • LED’s do not contain Toxic Chemicals such as Mercury.

Will your 12Vdc LED spotlights work in conjunction with Solar power?

ALED 12volt DC products will work well when powered from 12Volt DC batteries, that are charged from Solar panels. There are issues with trying to run LED lighting direct from solar panels as the output can vary and is not a consistent even power supply. Some LED’s are not compatible with inverted AC supplies.

I have seen the same products online for a lower price – why?

You may have seen similar looking products online, but there is a huge difference in the quality of LED products.

Our research and testing has found:

    • forged or counterfeit LED chips,
    • low  or poor quality  electronic components,
    • substandard wiring, insulation, heat sinks, and materials of construction

Unfortunately some LED manufacturers are not afraid to cut corners to produce cheap products, and to maximise their profits. However in such cases, the customer always loses out with poor quality and lack of reliability. At JRALED LED Lighting, we only market items that are fully compatible with Australian Standards, and our rigorous testing programme ensures the quality of our products.

Our research has also found evidence of companies offering poor working conditions, child labour and the exploitation of peoples situations, low or no quality control, inadequate testing, and making it difficult or impossible to claim on warranties. JRALED LED Lighting will have nothing to do with such organisations, and we pride ourselves on having high ethical standards, and supporting manufacturers that share those principles.

JRALED LED Lighting is an Chinese Based Company, that supplies Quality LED Lighting at an affordable price, and will honour warranty claims as long as a product is installed correctly and used for the propose it was designed to meet.

  • How long do LEDs last?

LEDs are notable for being extremely long-lasting products. Many LEDs have a rated life of up to 50,000 hours. This is approximately 50 times longer than a typical incandescent, 20-25 times longer than a typical halogen, and 8-10 times longer than a typical CFL. Used 12 hours a day, a 50,000 bulb will last more than 11 years. Used 8 hours a day, it will last 17 years!

  • What does LED stand for?

LED is short for light-emitting diode.
